Similar species
There are several similar brownish milkcaps. Lactarius camphoratus is characterised by its dark colour, watery white latex and characteristic smell of curry or bouillon cube.
Lactarius rufus is larger and has an acrid peppery taste. L. helvus has watery clear latex, and L. aurantiacus has a more distinctly orange colour.
