Characteristics

– Cap convex to expanded, smooth, orange, sometimes with a small umbo.
– Gills adnate to slightly decurrent, whitish, sometimes with a yellow-red tone.
– Stem orange to yellow-brown, palest at the top.
– Flesh exudes white latex from fresh injuries, taste mild.

Ecology

Grows in mossy coniferous forest across most of the Nordic countries.

Notes

Sometimes stated as edible but has little food value.

Similar species

There are several similar orange-brown milkcaps, but none are poisonous except Lactarius helvus, which is laxative.
