Characteristics

– Cap initially convex, later expanded, white, turning yellowish when touched.
– Gills initially greyish-white to pink, turning dark brown with age.
– Stem white, sometimes with a faint pinkish tone, often abruptly widened near the bulbous base.
– Ring white, thin, often torn.
– Flesh with a pleasant almond scent.

Ecology

Grows in coniferous forests, often in the needle litter under old spruces.

Notes

A tasty mushroom suitable for all kinds of dishes, but it belongs to the group of mushrooms that can contain high levels of the heavy metal cadmium and should therefore not be eaten too frequently.

Similar species

Similar to Agaricus arvensis that lacks the bulbous stem base.
