Characteristics

- Cap first convex, then expanded, creamy-white, turning yellowish with age or handling.
- Gills first grayish-white, later gray-pink and finally black-brown.
- Stem white, cylindrical, smooth, with a thin hanging ring.
- The underside of the ring soon cracks open in a cogwheel-like pattern.

Ecology

Grows in lawns, forest edges, parks, gardens and other open grasslands.

Notes

A good edible mushroom, but can contain high levels of the heavy metal cadmium and should therefore not be consumed too frequently.

Similar species

Knölchampinjon has a swollen stem base, edible.
Vit kungschampinjon has a ring with a flocked underside, edible.
Giftchampinjon turns bright yellow upon scratching and has an unpleasant smell, toxic.
Vit flugsvamp is deadly poisonous, with white gills and a volva.
