Characteristics

– Cap convex to expanded, with brown scales on a whitish background.
– Gills pale when young, then pink and dark brown with age.
– Stem white, cylindrical, slightly reddening when scraped, usually with a bulous base.
– Ring white, thin, with white to brownish-white scales on the underside.
– Flesh white, reddening when cut.

Ecology

Grows in coniferous forests, often in the needle litter under old spruces and in anthills.

Notes

A good edible mushroom.

Similar species

Agaricus langei is similar, but it reddens more strongly and lacks a bulbous stem base. Inexperienced mushroom pickers might potentially mistake brown-scaled mushrooms for toxic Amanita species.
