Characteristics

– Cap initially convex, later expanded, shiny white, often slightly yellowing when scratched.
– Gills initially whitish, turning grayish-pink to dark brown with age.
– Stem white, widened and floccose at the base, faintly yellowing when scratched.
– Ring hanging, large and thin, underside covered in soft scales.
– Flesh with a mild taste and first with a pleasant almond scent, but soon unpleasant, urine-like when aging.

Ecology

Primarily found in meadows and pastures but also in herb-rich coniferous forests. Possibly prefers calcareous soil.

Notes

Edible but not considered a delicacy.

Similar species

Agaricus xanthodermus is similar but yellows intensely upon bruising and has an unpleasant odor, mildly toxic.
The Destroying Angel (Amanita virosa) has white gills and a volva at the base, highly toxic.
