- Cap convex to expanded, light brown to brown, often with large darker brown scales.
- Cap margin remaining inrolled for a long time, often cracking and exposing the white cap flesh.
- Gills adnexed, white, rather crowded.
- Stem firm, whitish-brown to brown, with irregular dark bands or spots, white above the membranous ring.
- Flesh white, with a strong and characteristic sweetish smell reminiscent of certain sweets or cardamom buns.

Ecology
Grows with pine on sandy ground, in the north on pine heaths and in the south in nutrient-poor rocky pine forest.
Notes
A long-overlooked edible mushroom which in recent years has proved to be common, especially in northern parts of the Nordic region.
Similar species
Tricholoma focale lacks the scaly-cracked cap of Tricholoma matsutake and smells farinaceous, inedible.
