- Cap hemispherical when young, then convex to expanded with a depressed centre, bright red to apple-red, smooth, slightly sticky in wet weather.
- Gills adnexed to adnate, white to faintly cream-coloured, sometimes with red edges.
- Stem white, often with shades of red.
- Flesh white, with mild taste, in young specimens the taste is often somewhat acrid.

Grows mainly with pine in older nutrient-poor coniferous forest throughout the Nordic region.
Similar species
There are many brittlegills with red cap colour. A classic inedible lookalike is Russula emetica, which is smaller and has a sharply burning taste.
