Characteristics

- Cap shell-shaped, matt, violet when young, becoming yellow-brown with age.
- Gills decurrent, violet when young, becoming yellowish with a violet tone with age.
- Stem short, lateral, finely hairy at the base.
- Flesh tough, whitish, with a mild smell.

Ecology

Grows on birch wood, sometimes other deciduous wood.

Notes

Tough and inedible but not poisonous.

Similar species

May be confused with Pleurotus ostreatus, which is more blue-grey in colour and has pale gills.
