Characteristics

– Cap convex to expanded, pink to yellow-red, zonate, with a bearded cap margin.
– Gills adnate to slightly decurrent, yellow-white with a pink tone.
– Stem smooth, pale pink.
– Flesh exudes white latex with a burning acrid taste from fresh injuries.

Ecology

Grows with birch in wooded pastures, deciduous and mixed forests.

Notes

Edible, but must be parboiled in plenty of water, which is then discarded before preparation.

Similar species

Lactarius pubescens has a paler cap colour and lacks distinct zones on the cap.
