Characteristics

- Cap orange to salmon-pink, usually zoned, strongly green-spotted with age.
- Gills adnate to decurrent, orange to salmon-coloured.
- Stem orange with a salmon-pink tinge.
- Flesh exudes a carrot-coloured latex that turns wine-red after 5-10 minutes.

Ecology

Grows with pine on calcareous soil. Mainly on Gotland and Öland, with occasional records on the mainland.

Notes

Lactarius semisanguifluus is edible but so rare that it is seldom noted as an edible mushroom.

Similar species

All milkcaps that bleed a carrot-coloured or wine-coloured latex are edible and good saffron milkcaps.
