Characteristics

– Cap convex to expanded, yellow-red to liver-coloured, often paler towards the cap margin.
– Gills cream-coloured, with an ochre-yellow tinge with age, adnate to slightly decurrent with a tooth.
– Stem yellow-red, paler than the cap.
– Flesh exudes white latex from fresh injuries, taste mild.

Ecology

Grows with oak, beech, lime and aspen in deciduous forest and parks, often on clayey and calcareous soil.

Notes

Sometimes stated as edible but has little food value.

Similar species

There are several similar orange-brown milkcaps, but none are poisonous except Lactarius helvus, which is laxative.
