Characteristics

– Cap convex to expanded, velvety, dull sepia brown to olive-brown.
– Cap cuticle cracking with age, mostly pale yellow and not markedly red in the cracks.
– Tubes yellow when young, becoming dull yellow-green with age, with angular pores that bruise blue when handled.
– Stem dull yellow-brown to gray-brown, sometimes with faint reddish tones.
– Flesh pale yellow, sometimes slightly reddish just beneath the cap cuticle.

Ecology

Grows with oak in broadleaf forests, pastures, and parks in southern and central Sweden.

Notes

Edible, but not of any greater value.

Similar species

There are several similar species in the genus, but for mushroom pickers it is not necessary to distinguish among them, as all are edible.
Xerocomellus chrysenteron is similar but often has a reddish tone in the cap flesh that becomes visible in the cracks of the cap, edible.
