– Cap convex, often somewhat angular and irregular, becoming expanded with age, smooth, white to grayish-white, sometimes with a brownish center.
– Gills initially grayish-white, becoming gray-pink to dark brown with age.
– Stem swollen towards the base.
– Both cap and stem develop yellow stains upon bruising, turning gray to dirty brown within a few minutes.
– Ring white, with cogwheel like scales on the underside.
– Smell unpleasant, reminding of ink, phenol, carbolic acid, iodoform, hospital, or soft soap. The smell becomes particularly pronounced during heating.
