Characteristics

- Cap bell-shaped or convex to expanded, often with a low umbo.
- Cap colour variable, yellowish-grey, yellow-brown, grey-brown or brownish-black, often with an olive-green to olive-brown tinge and with a whitish cap margin.
- Gills adnexed, dirty white, becoming spotted reddish-brown to salmon-pink with age.
- Stem dirty white, often with a grey-green tinge.
- Flesh white, with a characteristic smell of soap or an old dishcloth.
- The whole fruitbody develops reddish-brown to salmon-pink spots with age.

Ecology

Grows in deciduous and coniferous forest throughout the Nordic region.

Notes

Tricholoma saponaceum is a complex of several different species which, in addition to T. saponaceum s. str., also includes T. atrovirens, T. boudieri and T. rapipes.

Similar species

Can be difficult to identify because of the large variation in form and colour. The best character is that the whole fruitbody develops reddish-brown to salmon-pink spots with age.
