Characteristics

- Cap hemispherical when young, then convex to expanded with a depressed centre, slightly sticky in wet weather.
- Cap colour variable, with shades of green, yellow, violet and pink, but usually dominated by green and violet.
- Gills adnate to slightly decurrent, forked, white, elastic.
- Stem white, sometimes with a faint violet tone.
- Flesh white, with mild nutty taste.

Ecology

Grows with oak and beech in southern and central Nordic region.

Notes

Inexperienced mushroom pickers should beware of confusion with Amanita phalloides, which is deadly poisonous.

Similar species

There are several similar brittlegills, but as an edible mushroom picker you do not need to distinguish them, as all of these are edible if they have a mild taste.
