Ecology
Primarily grows in coniferous forests and is common in northern Europe, but also occurs in coniferous and mixed forests under beech further south.
Notes
Edible and tasty, but it's advisable to cut off the lower part of the stem before cooking as it becomes woody with age.
Similar species
Differs from other species in the genus Cortinarius by the distinct ring on the stem.
