Characteristics
Ecology
Grows in dense clusters on stumps of deciduous trees, can sometimes also grow on conifer stumps and on the stem bases of living deciduous trees.
Notes
Good edible mushroom, but use only the caps because the stem is often tough and woody.
Similar species
Galerina marginata is a very similar and dangerously poisonous species, but it lacks the characteristic projecting scales on the stem.
Armillaria species are not poisonous but can cause stomach pain. Most Armillaria species have a scaly cap and always a white spore print.
