Similar species

What we previously called Paxillus involutus is a complex of several closely related and similar species. P. obscurisporus is usually larger and has darker purplish-brown spore print. P. cuprinus has a different spore shape (microscopy required), and P. ammoniavirescens develops a green colour reaction on the cap in contact with ammonia.
