Ecology
Grows on decaying plant remains such as needles, leaves and grass in forests and compost heaps. Usually late in the season, in September-October.
Notes
Edible, but in some people it can cause nausea if not parboiled before preparation.
Similar species
Lepista personata has a pale brown-grey cap and a reddish-violet stem, edible. Lepista sordida is smaller and has a hygrophanous cap, i.e. it changes colour in wet and dry conditions respectively. Laccaria amethystina is also violet in colour, but is small and slender.
Some webcaps, such as Cortinarius traganus, may be similar in size and colour, but these have brown spore print and cobweb-like veil remnants.
