Characteristics

– Cap yellow-white to pinkish white, often with a pink tone towards the margin, with a finely hairy/bearded cap margin.
– Gills emarginate to adnate, whitish, sometimes with a pink tone.
– Stem whitish, often with a pink tone at the top.
– Flesh exudes white latex with a burning acrid taste.

Ecology

Grows with birch on dry ground in lawns, gardens, parks, roadsides etc., often on calcareous soil.

Similar species

Lactarius torminosus is usually darker pink and has a distinctly zoned cap. The cap margin also has longer hairs/beard. L. scoticus is a similar species that is smaller and grows in fens and on other moist ground with birch.
