– Cap convex to flat, dry, brick-red with a paler margin.
– Cap margin often with pale, floccose veil remnants.
– Gills yellow-white when young, often with a greenish tone, becoming grey-violet from the spores with age.
– Stem brown-red below, whitish above, often with thin remnants of the partial veil that are stained black by the spores.
– Flesh yellow-white to reddish brown, with a slightly bitter taste.

Ecology
Grows in clusters on stumps and logs of deciduous trees, mainly oak and beech.
Notes
Contains a gastrointestinal irritant toxin that can cause vomiting and diarrhoea.
Similar species
May resemble the edible Hypholoma capnoides, but H. lateritium has a bitter taste and often more veil remnants on the cap.
