– Cap convex to flat, yellow with a reddish-brown centre.

– Gills sulphur-yellow when young, becoming greenish yellow with a grey-black tone from the spores with age.
– Stem yellow, often with thin remnants of the partial veil near the top that are soon stained black by the spores.
– Flesh sulphur-yellow, with a very bitter taste.

Ecology
Grows in clusters on stumps and logs of deciduous trees, sometimes conifers.
Notes
Contains a gastrointestinal irritant toxin that can cause vomiting and diarrhoea.
Similar species
May resemble the edible Hypholoma capnoides, but H. fasciculare has a bitter taste and yellow-green gills.
