Characteristics

– Cap red-yellow to light beige, often with a broad umbo.
– Gills decurrent, thick, widely spaced, waxy.
– Stem usually lighter than the cap, somewhat tapered.

Ecology

Grows in meadows and natural pastures, as well as in open deciduous forests and forest edges.

Notes

A good edible mushroom with a mild taste, best used in mixed mushroom dishes along with more flavorful mushrooms.

Similar species

Hygrophorus nemoreus is similar but often has a finely scaly cap center and grows with oak.
