Characteristics

– Cap, when young, semi-spherical, becoming convex to expanded with age, gray-brown to olive-brown with white granular remnants.
– Cap margin usually somewhat striate in mature fruiting bodies.
– Gills free, white.
– Stem white, with a thin pending ring that easily disappears.
– Stem base swollen, with a distinct marginate bulb.
– Flesh white, even just below the cap cuticle.

Ecology

Grows with oak and beech in deciduous forests and parks.

Notes

Contains toxins affecting the nervous system, causing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, seizures, and palpitations.

Similar species

Amanita regalis is similar but has slightly yellowish flesh just below the cap cuticle, toxic. Macrolepiota procera has dark scales on the cap and a movable ring on the stem.
