Characteristics

– Cap beige to yellow-orange, resembling the color of French bread, often with several caps fused together.
– Pores white, often orange-spotted, decurrent.
– Stem white, often with orange-brown spots, sometimes with several stems fused at the base.
– Flesh white, almost mild in taste when young, becoming somewhat bitter as it ages.

Ecology

Grows in large clusters in mossy coniferous forests and lichen-rich pine forests, usually with pine. It is not uncommon in northern Europe.

Notes

Edible when young but becomes bitter and unappetizing as it ages. It may have a slightly laxative effect, especially if consumed in large quantities or when using older specimens.

Similar species

Albatrellus ovinus lacks the orange colors and the bracket-like growth.
