Characteristics

– Cap convex, orange, minutely tomentose.
– Cap skin overhanging, i.e. extends a few millimeters beyond the cap edge.
– Tubes dirty white.
– Stem white, with white floccules that stay white for a long time, but can darken slightly to reddish-brown with age.
– Flesh turns reddish gray to violaceus grey when bruised, then transitions to blackish.

Ecology

Grows with aspen in deciduous and mixed forests, primarily in Northern Europe.

Notes

Leccinum is a genus with several species that can look very similar. As a mushroom picker, you don't need to distinguish them all, as they are all edible.

Similar species

Leccinum aurantiacum has a more reddish brown cap, and brownish floccules on the stem. L. versipelle has a brick-red cap color and black floccules on the stem.
