Ecology
Grows with oak and hazel in broadleaf woodland and hazel groves in the southern and central parts of the Nordic region.
Notes
A complex with several species that have recently attracted attention and which, in addition to T. sulphureum s. str., includes T. hemisulphureum and T. bryogenum. All should be regarded as inedible and suspected poisonous.
Similar species
A classic lookalike of Tricholoma equestre, but the strong pungent smell and the yellow colours in the flesh are typical of the sulphur-yellow Tricholoma species.
