Characteristics

– Cap convex to umbonate, with cracking brown scales that contrast against a white ground.
– Gills crowded, free, white, bruising reddish.
– Stem white, often reddening when scratched, turning brownish with age.
– Stem base bulbous, with a distinct margin.
– Ring thin, single-layered, with brown undersurface.
– Flesh white, reddening, with a slightly musty odor.

Ecology

Grows mainly in gardens, composts, woodchip piles and flowerbeds, sometimes also in deciduous and coniferous forests.

Notes

Not highly toxic but can cause temporary nausea.

Similar species

C. rachodes and C. olivieri are similar, but they have a double-layered ring and lack a distinctly marginate bulb at the stem base.
