Characteristics

- Cap zoned, with variable cap colour from dull orange-brown with grey-green elements to more intensely green-blue.
- Gills orange to ochre-coloured, sometimes with a pink tinge.
- Stem the colour of the cap or paler brownish-orange, usually with scrobiculate spots.
- Flesh exudes a carrot-coloured latex that turns wine-red after a while.

Ecology

Grows with pine in coniferous forest, preferably on damp and sandy ground.

Similar species

All saffron milkcaps exude a carrot-coloured to wine-red latex in fresh injuries and are good edible mushrooms.

Lactarius deterrimus lacks scrobiculate spots on the stem.
Lactarius deliciosus has a paler orange cap without green elements and with a silvery-grey tone.
Lactarius sanguifluus bleeds a wine-red latex.
Lactarius semisanguifluus is more salmon-pink in colour and strongly green-spotted.
