Characteristics

– Cap yellowish-white, often with irregular veil remnants that soon disappear.
– Gills free, white.
– Stem with a yellowish-white pendant ring and sharply edged bulb.
– Flesh with a characteristic odor reminiscent of raw potatoes.

Ecology

Grows with birch in deciduous and mixed forests, also with spruce in coniferous forests.

Notes

Occasionally occurs in an all-white form without yellowish elements (Amanita citrina var. alba).

Similar species

Amanita virosa is similar but highly poisonous, distinguished by a sweet and nauseating odor and veil remnants at the base in the form of a sack-like volva.
