Characteristics

– Cap uneven, reddish-brown, with scattered dark scales, several caps are often fused together.
– Cap margin irregular, often white at the very edge.
– Spines decurrent, whitish when young, turning brownish with age, the tips remaining white for a long time.
– Stem paler than the cap, often with several stems branching from a common stem base.
– Flesh with an elusive odor reminiscent of flour, cucumber or leather, taste initially mild, then bitter to sharply burning.

Ecology

Grows with spruce in herb-rich old spruce forests, probably favored by calcareous soils, and occurs mainly in old-growth forests with long and continuous tree cover.

Similar species

In the same type of habitat there are several similar tooth fungi, for example Hydnellum fennicum which is more yellow-brown in color and smells of bitter almonds.
